Michael Carrick’s Half-Time Message and Bruno Fernandes’ Retaken Penalty Spark Manchester United’s Roma Comeback

Nov 04, 2026 1 Comments

Manchester United’s 3-2 comeback win over Roma may prove to be one of the most important nights of Michael Carrick’s managerial career. It began with a saved penalty, a furious Old Trafford crowd and United trailing 2-0, but ended with Bruno Fernandes converting from the spot for a second time and Matheus Cunha scoring twice to secure United’s first victory in 10 matches.

The decisive moment came when Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante encroached into the penalty area as Fernandes took his initial spot-kick. Video assistant referee Carlos del Cerro Grande ordered the penalty to be retaken, giving United a lifeline at a point when Carrick’s position as head coach appeared increasingly precarious.

Carrick’s half-time message

United’s first-half display was heavily criticised by former players Wayne Rooney and Nicky Butt, who were working as pundits for Amazon Prime. Rooney urged United’s players to show greater passion and desire, describing their opening 45 minutes as lacking intensity.

Carrick, however, chose not to dwell on the frustration. He told his players at the interval to remain positive, avoid feeling sorry for themselves and focus on finding the next moment that could change the match.

“The easiest thing is to feel sorry for yourself when things go wrong,” Carrick said. “But that does not help anybody. We had to keep looking for the next solution.”

He also referenced the unique atmosphere at Old Trafford, telling his squad that one moment could alter the direction of the entire night. That moment arrived when Fernandes scored his retaken penalty in the 58th minute.

Fernandes’ composure under pressure

Fernandes showed remarkable mental strength after seeing his first penalty saved. Rather than allowing the setback to affect him, he stepped up again following the VAR intervention and drove his second attempt confidently into the net.

Carrick praised his captain’s mentality, saying Fernandes deserved great credit for taking the penalty a second time and finishing it with such composure. The goal gave United belief and energised a crowd that had grown increasingly restless during the first half.

Cunha completes the comeback

Matheus Cunha then took centre stage, scoring twice in the final seven minutes to complete United’s turnaround. His first goal levelled the match, while his second secured all three points and sparked wild celebrations at Old Trafford.

Cunha was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card, creating a nervy finish, but United held on to claim a first win in 10 matches. The result also gave Carrick some breathing space after weeks of mounting pressure.

A win that does not solve everything

Despite the drama, the victory does not erase United’s wider problems. Supporters staged protests against the Glazer family, minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox before kick-off and during the first half.

Those protests are unlikely to disappear simply because of one result. United’s hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox, looked visibly relieved at full time, but the club’s underlying issues remain.

There are also historical warnings. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United came from behind to beat Atalanta 3-2 at Old Trafford, only to lose 5-0 at home to Liverpool four days later. Solskjaer was sacked within a month. Similarly, Jose Mourinho appeared close to dismissal in 2018 before United recovered from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle, yet he was sacked 13 games later.

What comes next for Carrick

Carrick was asked whether the win would help him sleep better, but he admitted it would not. Instead, he said he felt pleased for the players, who he believes have continued to work hard despite the club’s difficult run.

United now turn their attention to a crucial Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. Carrick described the game as important and said the squad must prepare properly rather than dwell on the emotional high of the Roma victory.

The win has improved United’s chances of progressing from the Champions League league phase, but Carrick knows that one result will not be enough to change the broader narrative around his future.

Pundits see reasons for optimism

Former Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel praised United’s second-half response, saying the players finally showed the fight that had been missing earlier in the match. However, he also cautioned that the comeback should be seen as a benchmark rather than proof that all problems have been solved.

Former England defender Stephen Warnock believes the nature of the win could be beneficial for Carrick. He argued that United’s reaction after falling 2-0 down showed the players are still willing to fight for their manager and for each other.
